Gopro Hero 4 Rumors Heat Up As Summer Release Approaches

There's no more popular POV camera in the world that the Gopro – and for good reason – and there is good reason to believe a new model is just about to drop. The internets are heating up with many rumors about what specs the new camera, likely to be called the Hero 4, will have … here's a roundup of the most likely features:

General

4K Ultra HD H.264 Encoder

– Film in 4k resolution at 30fps
– High Profile with B-frames for high efficiency

Super High Frame Rate Modes

– 1080p at 120fps
– 720p at 240fps

Advanced Imaging

700Mpixels/s oversampling performance
Multi-exposure HDR and WDR tone mapping
Electronic image stabilization (EIS)
Improved MCTF with advanced sharpening

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Remote viewfinder, playback
Upload pictures and video to social media

So what does this all mean to those of you who are not techies? Well basically they're saying that overall the quality of the video image will be greatly improved due to better chips and software in the camera. This is an especially big deal when it comes to filming in less than perfect conditions like overcast days, low-light situations and the like.

What's 4K? Well, it's basically another even larger format that HD (about four times the screen size actually!) and even if you are not going to be using it for delivery (ie. you're not Steven Speilberg) if you shoot in this mode and then "shrink" it down to HD, it's going to look super amazing.

Additionally, the faster framerates in 1080 will mean you can now film all the super slow-motion you like and still be able to keep everything in a full-HD format – increasingly more important as the overall video quality of Youtube and other services keeps improving. You don't want your videos looking like oldf VHS dubs! And 240 frames per second in 720?! Holy smokes batman, we're entering never before seen territory on a camera that cost less than ten grand, never mind $350!

All I can say is that it's an exciting time to be a camera geek. And for those of you who aren't just be confident that your shitty teletubby-like 12-minute long helmet cam shots of you cruising that green run will never look so good!
